DR. LEZLI LEVENE HARVELL

Creator + Chief Curator (she/her/hers)

Dr. Lezli Levene Harvell is a wife, mother of five daughters, and board-certified pediatric dentist who has spent her career providing oral healthcare to healthy, medically compromised, and special needs children. As a food enthusiast, she found a lack of representation of chefs and beverage professionals of color in the higher echelons of culinary culture. She founded The Iconoclast Dinner Experience (IDE) in 2015 with one dinner at the James Beard House to address this void. Today, the IDE is an Anthem Award-winning platform that has expanded to a Webby-nominated podcast and five signature events held annually, each with its own paradigm-shifting theme. Lezli has curated programming for global brands including Meta (Facebook) and Pepsi, the IDE has partnered with luxury properties and well-appointed kitchen brands. Additionally, Lezli has been quoted as an expert in national publications such as Bon Appétit and Saveur.

IMPOLITE CONVERSATION PODCAST

JOIN us for this weekly podcast with Lezli, Creator + Curator of The Iconoclast Dinner Experience,  and her daughter, Zuri, where they explore Culture, Race, and Societal Issues through the lens of cultural critics, industry experts and writers.

SEASON TWO includes Impolite Conversations on topics such as AMERICA’S DEEP HISTORY WITH ALCOHOL, PASSING WHILE INDIAN, and the DISNEYIFICATION OF PIRATES.

Jan 23, 2023

We’re closing out our theme of race as a social construct by exploring the phenomenon of White men purchasing Native American identity prevalent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr. Lezli is joined by Dr. Gregory Smithers, a professor of American history at Virginia Commonwealth University and author of Reclaiming Two-Spirits. His book is a sweeping history of indigenous traditions of gender, sexuality, and resistance. The two converse about what set the train of $5 Indians in motion, why it was so easy and lucrative for White men to purchase Indigenous identity, and why present-day Indigenous tribal leaders are grappling with what to do with the descendants of those who purchased Indigenous identity and are currently on tribal rolls.

IDE Impolite Conversation is available on all major platforms.
