WHY HE IS AMAZING: Born and raised in San Diego, California to a large Mexican-American family, Gerardo Gonzalez draws influence from cross-cultural references that come naturally from his Southern California upbringing. Informed by the traditional dishes of his family, Gonzalez uses world influences to trace cultural lineages within Mexican cuisine, adding a coastal California twist. Having lived abroad for many years, Gonzalez returned to California's Bay Area where his interest in culinary pursuits grew stronger. Working both the front house and kitchen of many restaurants, Gonzalez moved to New York City in 2011. In 2013, Gonzalez started El Rey Coffee Bar and Luncheonette, which grew a cult-like following for its California-Mexican twist on healthy food, garnishing a starred review from the New York Times, among countless publications and features. In 2016, Gerardo Gonzalez opened Lalito (formerly Lalo) in Manhattan's Chinatown. Further exploring themes of a multitude of cultural influence, Gonzalez hopes to expand the idea of what California cuisine can be.
