Chef Kamal Grant's love for baking started at a very young age when he realized that confections make people happy and he wanted create things to bring people joy. After high school, Grant joined the Navy and used his enlistment as an opportunity to pursue his dream. Grant served as a baker on the USS John Young where he quickly gained the praise of his shipmates because of the delicious cinnamon rolls he baked. The Navy not only gave Grant an opportunity to bake, his world travels exposed him to international confections that combined flavors and textures that he had not been exposed to in the United States. An ice cream sandwich made of multicolored bread and sweet red bean soup in Singapore, Vegemite on toast and Milo in Australia, shawarma made with roti and candy made of rosewater in Dubai are a few of the flavors and global confections that would forever change Grant’s approach to baking. After his enlistment with the Navy he studied at The Culinary Institute of America where he focused on high end desserts, plate presentations, classical techniques and the flavors and textures of award winning chefs. During his time at the Institute, Grant interned with the renowned Chef Keegan Gerhard, at the Windsor Court Hotel, who was named one of the nation's top 10 pastry chefs by both Chocolatier and Pastry Art & Design magazines. After the Culinary Institute of America, Grant refined his skills at the American Institute of Baking where he focused on the science of baking. In 2008, to realize his culinary vision Grant established Sublime Doughnuts in Atlanta where Grant presents global flavors and textures on an artisanal doughnut canvas. Since it's establishment, Sublime Doughnuts has developed a cult like following, Dana Cowin, editor in chief of Food and Wine magazine says, “There is no better breakfast in the world than sweets-savant Kamal Grant’s Fresh Strawberry N Cream doughnut, unless, of course, you want one of his 27 other flavors". In addition to being named as one of "ATL's Best Donuts" by Thrillist, Sublime Doughnuts was voted "America's Best Bakery" by Bake Magazine, was included in Food and Wine Magazine's "America's Best Doughnuts", Food Network's "Best Doughnuts from Coast to Coast" and USA Today's "America's 12 Best Donut Shops".
